Michael Smith started proceedings against James Wilson with a 5-3 win but that didn't tell the full story in Wolverhampton. Wilson had 14 missed doubles despite hitting six 180's and of those 14 that were missed he missed 7 to force a decider. Smith hit a 97 average and will be grateful for his opponents downfall on the doubles for his first group points.
Stephen Bunting also faced some drama in his opener. He took on the young Dutchman Jeffrey de Zwaan who came back from 4-1 down to force a decider but then he squandered three match darts to win the match to allow the Bullet to survive a real scare at the Wolves Civic. Scott Mitchell and Dave Chisnall would of been watching and now know it won't be as easier as they thought to down the Black Cobra and he could yet be the surprise of the group.
