Van Gerwen after winning Players Championship 1 in Wigan: ‘I had to work really hard to win’

Michael van Gerwen won his third consecutive title on Saturday winning Players Championship 1 in Wigan.
Van Gerwen saw off Dutch compatriot Jermaine Wattimena in the final and said he was proud of how he played. He also called it a big achievement for him due to the amount of players and the pressure on him. "I am proud of how I played today, especially in the final," said three-time World Champion Van Gerwen. "It's always a big achievement to win a ProTour because there are 127 players who all want to beat me, there is a huge target on my back. "I had to work really hard to win this today, you have to be at your best against these players and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow." for more information about the Pro Tour.

- It happens. Remember, anyone who has watched German and Dutch players in matches - their respective countries will have seen/heard just as bad jeering (if not worse). - Was watching an old World Masters final the other day between Eric Bristow and John Lowe, the crowd respect for both players on throw was first class, not a sound. You can imagine now the idiots who were whistling on De Deckers throw proudly boasting about it on social media. I even turned to my husband and said "Could you imagine this happening if Russ Bray was the referee tonight? At least there would have been a crowd admonishment- Ladies and Gentleman please."
