Van Gerwen defeated another first time finalist for this year in William O’Connor 8-2 in the final to set a marker ahead of Blackpool.
He spoke afterwards and said that he was delighted to win the trophy and was pleased with how he played. For him he said that luckily he won due to a phenomenal performance from O’Connor but believes his strong mindset brought him through.
"I am delighted to win this trophy and I'm pleased with how I played this weekend," said Van Gerwen, who has lost just two matches on the
European Tour in 2018.
"William played really well all weekend, it was a phenomenal performance from him but there can only be one winner and luckily it was me.
"Of course, it’s always hard to win titles like this but you need to have a strong mindset to beat these top players.
"It was a great feeling to hit the nine-darter in front of such a great crowd – it’s been well overdue on the European Tour and I’m glad it was me who hit it."
