The PDC World Darts Championship started for Michael van Gerwen in a very bizarre way. The Dutchman got a glass of beer right in his face just before his walk on.
Alan Tabern, Van Gerwen's opponent, was already on the podium. The sounds of Pink Floyd's tune was already audible, but the crowd was waiting for Van Gerwen. That took so long that Sky Sports decided to show old footage of 'Mighty Mike' to fill the gap.
Footage from Sky Sports showed what happened. A 'fan' threw a glass of beer in the face of the two-time world champion. After his eyes were well flushed Van Gerwen could still set course towards the stage.
