Darts continues to be
one of the most exciting sports to watch in-person or live on television, with
players, especially from the PDC, more popular than ever before. And leading
darts players and the personalities from the sport, like many others, also have
an interest in football, and here are the teams they’re known to support.
Michael van Gerwen
There’s only one place
to start, and that’s with Michael van Gerwen, a three-time PDC world champion.
Thirty-four-year-old Mighty Mike has been playing darts since 2002, winning too
many honours since then to mention. Van Gerwen hails from the Netherlands, just
twenty-five miles away from the city of Eindhoven, so PSV are his team. And
like PSV, just looking at the odds offered by
major sports books online, van Gerwen
is always in the running to win things and has already collected the Premier
League Darts title in 2023.
Michael Smith
Current PDC world
champion
Michael
Smith hails from St Helens, which is on Merseyside, so it
may surprise some that he’s actually an avid Manchester United supporter. The
world number one didn’t publicly reveal his allegiance to the club until he was
asked why the crowd at a 2019 event in Liverpool gave somewhat of a mixed
reaction to him, even though you could have said it was his home crowd. Smith
suggested it was because he was a Manchester United fan.
Gary Anderson
Gary Anderson may not be
the force he once was, but The Flying Scotsman has won most things throughout
his glittering career, including world championships back to back in 2015 and
2016. At fifty-two, and after multiple injury problems, Anderson will likely be
plotting what he plans to do when he puts the arrows away. And his plans could
include spending more time watching his beloved Hibernian, who are currently
playing in the Scottish Premiership.
Steven Bunting
Unlike Michael Smith,
Steven Bunting was born in Liverpool, lives in St Helens and supports
Liverpool. So, he always receives a warm welcome when he plays any events in
his home city. The thirty-eight-year-old, who is nicknamed The Bullet, is a
former BDO world champion, and at last year’s
PDC world championships, lost at the
quarter-finals stage to fellow St Helener Smith, who went on to win the whole
thing.
Willie Borland
Willie Borland is one of
the younger players on the PDC circuit at twenty-six, and while he’s still
looking to make the latter rounds of major tournaments, he is famous for
throwing an impressive nine-darter at the world championships in 2022. Big
Willie hails from East Calder, so like Anderson, he’s a Scotsman, but Borland’s
team is Rangers. And, according to his friends, he’s a fanatical supporter of
the Gers who is as passionate as they come.
For darts players, that’s
arguably the sport they love the most because of how much time they spend
practising and playing. But, when you’re involved in sports, you will likely enjoy
other types, and football is seemingly a bit hit with darts players on the PDC
circuit.
