A tie which was perhaps criticised by some for its placing on the Main Stage due to both not being at the peak of their powers but for
Gary Anderson, he produced a display which proved there might be some steam left in the Flying Scotsman yet.
Seeing off James Wade averaging almost 105 in a confident display 10-8, he moves through to the fifth round at the
UK Open.
After a closely fought start, Anderson began top hit top gear as he was averaging 107 and opened up a two-leg lead at 5-3 which turned into 6-4 at the interval. Wade on return from the break sealed back-to-back legs to seal parity at 6-4 before Anderson hit back-to-back 180’s to leave 16 to break back at 7-6 for an 11-darter.
He held from there to make it 8-6 with Wade unable to hit 145. Wade returned to trusty double 10 for 8-7.
Wade missed 120 for a break but Anderson made a mess of 90 and ‘The Machine’ hit double six then double four to make it 8-8 and he was throwing to go one away. But a superb 75 checkout saw Anderson go one away at 9-8 and a great hold of throw saw him seal the deal with an 11-dart 98 checkout.
He is joined by
Peter Wright who spent most of the game chasing Stephen Bunting but in the end, he wrapped up a narrow 10-9 victory over 'The Bullet' who missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish along the way.
Also through include the defending champion `in Danny Noppert who despite winning on the Main Stage last year was shunted onto Stage Five similar to his Premier League snub but as ever showed his quality in a 10-8 win over Jim Williams.
While Brendan Dolan and Luke Humphries were also among the late winners on the outer boards.
