Aspinall recalls story of walk-on: "I like going out drinking and clubbing and thought what song does everyone get up to"

The World Matchplay will start in Blackpool on Saturday. Nathan Aspinall reached the quarterfinals there last year.

Aspinall has been playing since 2019 with the song Mr. Brightside by The Killers as his walk-on. "I used to have Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode and I was 28 so I thought I need to get something a bit more current and it's one of them, I like going out drinking and clubbing and thought what song does everyone get up to," he said to Sky Sports.

"It's always Mr Brightside, as soon as that comes on everyone's up dancing so that's why I chose it."

But it nearly wasn't that song that was eventually picked to be his walk-on song. "I was torn between that and the Greatest Showman, luckily I chose the right one I believe but yeah it was the World Championship. The crowd loved it and got involved."

As well as speaking about his best moment with the song which was the 2019 World Matchplay against Mervyn King.

"Matchplay without a shadow of a doubt. They carried on singing after for two minutes and the hairs on the back of my arm were standing up. It was unreal."

He also recalled when the song took centre stage when returning home from the World Championship.

"We got back New Years Eve and missus wanted to go out so we went to a big nightclub and the DJ saw me and next minute he said we've got a celebrity in, he made the semi-final. He put the song on and got ushered to the dancefloor and everyone went mental."
