Bevins on replacing legendary referee Bruce Spendley in starting PDC career: "It was massive shoes to fill"

PDC referee Kirk Bevins was recently a guest on the PDC Europe YouTube stream, the Not So Late Night Darts Show.

Bevins started his career by succeeding legendary referee Bruce Spendley in 2013 who recently passed away.

"That was spine tingling watching that again," he said on footage of Spendley's last match calling. "It was massive shoes to fill, to have a different unique voice and to follow Bruce, his voice was superb. His 180's were superb. It's so iconic and it's so hard to follow."

He is now an experienced referee on the PDC circuit and discussed preparation. "I see if my voice is okay first you know, if I can't shout 140 or 100 then I'm going to struggle for a long match. There's things like the World Grand Prix where I really prepare so when people start on double 16 and then they go down for treble 19 and treble 7.

"I try and remember patterns rather than trying to calculate it. I just make sure I know what it's first to because there's nothing more embarassing than calling game shot and the match and it's first to seven instead of first to six."
