Clarys owes nickname to Brazilian soccer player: "Since then I've been The Sheriff"

Erik Clarys has long been known by the nickname "The Sheriff. He owes that nickname to a Brazilian soccer player.

Clarys, now a co-commentator for Belgian TV channel VTM2, saw Brazilian soccer player Zefilho score two goals for Lierse against Anderlecht on Nov. 19, 1995. "Zefilho celebrated his last goal with some 'pistol moves'. I told my mates I was going to do the same thing on the darts stage. And so it happened," Clarys told HLN.be.

Winmau World Masters

A week later, Clarys was competing at the Winmau World Masters, a tournament he won. "From the Quarter-FFinals on, I was shooting my fingers in the air. I've been 'The Sheriff' ever since. Later I entered the halls to the tones of the western movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."
