With Luke Littler dazzling to new heights, new records were broken. The PDC World Darts Championship is well known for using set play where players must win three legs to win a set.
In the first round of the World Championship, three sets won by the player are needed to win which goes forward to best of 13 sets in the final.
Previously, only Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson have managed to through over 130 average in a set. Van Gerwen's best effort wasn't even at the showpiece event, it was at the Masters of Darts event in Netherlands when he was only 17 when he averaged 133.91 against Raymond van Barneveld.
Anderson has done both in the World Championship hitting 132.62 and 131.93 during the 2016 and 2018 editions of the event against Jelle Klaasen and Jeff Smith respectively.
While Gerwyn Price broke the World Championship record back in 2021. He hit 136.64 in the 2021 final during Set Six. Only to be usurped in 2024 by Luke Littler who hit 140.91 in set four of his Last 64 tie against Ryan Meikle. Michael van Gerwen also previously held the record for highest nine dart set average. He hit 151.33 back in set three of the Last 32 back in 2013. That was also broken by Luke Littler this evening.
Phil Taylor is the only player on the list who has done it twice in the same game closing out his win over Shayne Burgess hitting 128.83 twice in set 3 and 5.
