Grant Sampson has stunned Keane Barry in the opening round of the 2022/23 PDC
World Darts Championship with a 3-1 sets win for the African Qualifier who is making his TV debut after defeating Devon Petersen en route to sealing his spot initially at the Alexandra Palace.
Not a pretty game with Sampson averaging 77 in victory with four 180's and missing 34 darts at double but Barry despite a superb season was out of sorts hitting 8/35 and not at his scoring best with a 78 average. Kim Huybrechts will be relishing a tie with Sampson if the same performance is on display with 'The Samurai' having to up his level next round.
Barry kicked off with his first maximum and sealed the opening leg for a break and followed it up with a hold with Sampson missing multiple darts after a 180 but after finally getting a leg on the board, Sampson hit a 75 checkout and continued to grow into the game with a 60 checkout for the opening set.
Barry continued to miss darts at double and Sampson hit double eight to break. A 125 checkout to hold saw Sampson go one away from a 2-0 sets lead.
Barry broke the streak of legs on double eight but Sampson was throwing for the set. He slipped into single one for 80 but returned with Barry missing break darts.
But multiple set darts came and went and Barry was throwing for the set suddenly. He missed more set darts but slipped into double six for a 2-0 sets lead.
Sampson hit a 60 checkout to hold at 1-0 up. Barry continued to miss darts at double and allowed Sampson multiple break chances but he couldn’t take them and ‘Dynamite’ nestled it in the corner of double two.
Barry broke on double 16 to go one away from a set back. Sampson missed 142 on double 20 and Barry claimed the set at 2-1 down.
Barry missed 160 but returned to hold on double 10. Sampson pinned double 20 to hit back before breaking on double eight to go one away. Sampson hit his fourth 180 and a 64 checkout to seal it.
