Alan Soutar was recently voted best newcomer in the PDC for 2021. The 43-year-old Scotsman made his debut with the PDC last year and has since moved up to 49th place in the Order of Merit.
The Courier set five major goals for Soutar to achieve this year. For starters, in order to qualify for the World Darts Championship, Soutar must finish in the top-32 of the Pro Tour Order of Merit. He is currently ninth on that ranking thanks to some good results and is therefore on the right track to qualify.
A second goal for 'Soots' is to qualify for the European Championship. He is already assured of a spot for the first two Euro Tours of the year in Germany and thus secured at least £2,000. Final win on such a Euro Tour yields 25,000 pounds. Soutar is currently 5th in the ranking for the European Championship, the top 32 qualify.
World Matchplay and World Grand Prix
Goals three and four are to claim spots at the World Matchplay and the World Grand Prix, the two largest ranking tournaments after the World Darts Championship. Soutar has a good chance for both tournaments, although he still needs some good results in the coming months.
World Cup of Darts
A final goal is the World Cup of Darts. Peter Wright is a certainty in the Scottish team, but Gary Anderson may drop out just like last year. Then second place in the Scottish team goes to the highest ranked player in the world ranking. Last year that was John Henderson, but Soutar is currently seventeen places higher than Henderson. After many years as captain of the Scottish national team in the WDF, he now also has a good chance to represent Scotland in the PDC.
