"I believe I will be winning majors this year": Peter Wright not short on confidence despite indifferent form

Peter Wright managed to qualify fairly easily for the quarterfinals at the Australian Darts Masters in Wollongong on Friday afternoon. He defeated Simon Whitlock 6-1, and also played a good match with an average of 95.42.

Wright had an immediate break via a 78 finish and took a 4-0 lead with a 16-darter and a 14-darter, among others. It was not until the fifth leg that Whitlock got on the scoreboard with a 21-darter. Wright then stepped up a level and ended the match with an 11-darter and a 15-darter.

''Simon has been unlucky recently, but luckily for me he didn’t turn up tonight,” admitted Wright on PDC.tv. The Scot has no lack of confidence despite his mediocre results in recent months.

“Mentally, I feel like I can beat anybody in the world, but if you ask any dart player that they’d all say the same. I haven’t got to prove a point to anybody, and I believe I will be winning majors this year.”

On Saturday, Wright will be back in action at the Australian Darts Masters. He will then play Rob Cross in the last eight. 'Voltage' narrowly triumphed 6-5 against Haupai Puha in the first round.
