Luke Woodhouse has broken new ground at the European Championship Darts thrashing Dirk van Duijvenbode 10-4 as he has reached his maiden major semi-final.
Van Duijvenbode, whose dissatisfaction was radiating from his face, was having a hard time. He often failed to get the first arrow in the triple 20 and also on the doubles it did not go smoothly. Only four out of seventeen darts on the outer ring were hit.
The 32-year-old Dutchman was quickly put at a wide disadvantage by Woodhouse. 'The Shed' won the first four legs of the match, partly after misses by Van Duijvenbode in the second and fourth leg.
Only in the fifth leg did Van Duijvenbode get on the scoreboard after a 66 finish. It did not provide a rebound, however, as scoring remained underwhelming. Two 16-darters allowed Woodhouse to extend the lead to 6-1.
With a 16-darter and a 146 finish Van Duijvenbode then came back to 6-3 and for a moment it looked like something was still to be gained for the dart player from 's-Gravenzande. However, Van Duijvenbode missed a chance to connect at 4-6, after which Woodhouse hit the double 8 for 7-3.
A 12-darter brought Woodhouse to 8-3, before Van Duijvenbode won his fourth leg. Van Duijvenbode had two more chances to make it 5-8, but missed two arrows on tops. Woodhouse punished these misses with a 100 finish for 9-4, after which Woodhouse finished the job with a 48 check-out.
For Woodhouse, it is the first time in his career that he has qualified for the last four at a major. In the semifinals, he will play the winner of the duel between Gary Anderson and Ritchie Edhouse.
