Martin Lukeman was defeated in the final of the Grand Slam of Darts 16-3 by
Luke Littler and said that he needs to improve in order for his trajectory to continue.
But not on the oche where he had scintillating form. Linked to that though is stamina and surviving those final days when perhaps players like Lukeman aren't used to pacing themselves.
He said that all he wanted to do was nap before being beaten by Littler and after defeating Mickey Mansell, he said it was eerily similar to when he lost to Luke Humphries in Munich during his breakout year. He also jokingly referred to his words on Luke Littler where he said that the prodigy was eating a curry, Boost bar and squashies while he wanted a cigarette and some water and that the 17-year-old was fuelled on that all day during his run to the title.
"Getting there was brilliant. I played really well in that qualifier. The nine days I was there, it was all excellent. It was long, that last day because we were only playing one game a day when we were there. That final day when I beat Mansell, Luke's having a curry or whatever. I'm looking for a sofa to have a nap," said Lukeman to Love The Darts Podcast.
"I'm going to work on that, that's what I'm taking out of this. I'm going to work on my stamina, I've already started my diet. Hoping I can get my fitness levels up a bit more as that will help with the Europeans also."
"The last final I got to was a couple of years ago in Munich and exactly the same happened against Luke Humphries. I was run down, I was knackered and wanted to curl up in the hotel. I am going to learn from that."
