In "On This Day In ..." DartsNews looks back on a tournament or performance of a player on a specific date. This time a return back only three years to July 30, 2017.
This date went down in history as the day of darts legend
Phil Taylor claimed his last major title. The Power took the title in his favourite tournament - the
World Matchplay in Blackpool. Taylor managed to win this tournament sixteen times in 24 appearances.
He had a tough route though to the final. The quarterfinals were reached with victories over Gerwyn Price (10-5) and Raymond van Barneveld (11-3). In the last eight, Michael van Gerwen was beaten 16-6 easily by his old rival.
In the semi-final battle Adrian Lewis was unable to keep up with his fellow Stoke-on-Trent ace and lost out 17-9. Then it was Peter Wright who lost to Taylor (18-8) in the final.
