The PDC recently announced some changes to this year's Qualifying System for the Grand Slam of Darts. The 2021 edition may also be overhauled.
Only two
BDO players in
Wayne Warren and
Mikuru Suzuki (the respective World Champions) will be invited for the next edition of the
Grand Slam of Darts. In recent years there were eight.
"Due to the lack of confirmed events within the BDO and elsewhere in amateur darts, there will be no further BDO invites or invitations to players from outside the PDC system in 2020. The qualification system will be reviewed for 2021, including the position of invitations to non-PDC players," said a press release.
In recent years there has been increasing criticism of the number of BDO players on the Grand Slam of Darts. Partly because the tournament in Wolverhampton is now a PDC ranking event.
Also due to the restrictions being lifted on BDO players making it to Q-School, many have either switched or have desires to switch in the future.
The WDF have
previously said that they have been in discussions about taking these spots but the Coronavirus pandemic has paid heed to those plans for at least this year.
Now though with only two spots filled it will be interesting to see who will fill the rest if they are not filled by main PDC players and whether other routes including the Challenge and Development Tour are explored.
