Ross Smith edges past out-of-sorts Cullen as Meikle claims Clayton scalp at European Darts Open

Two big names have fell by the wayside at the European Darts Open with Joe Cullen and Jonny Clayton both losing at the second round stage in Leverkusen.

Cullen was dumped out by European Champion Ross Smith who saw off 'The Rockstar' 6-4 with three 180's and a 126 checkout en route. He took the pivotal break with that checkout and held with a 13 and 15-darter before sealing it in the tenth leg via double four.

While Ryan Meikle accounted for Jonny Clayton giving 'The Ferret' an early exit with a 6-3 win. It was like Cullen, an under-par display from the Welshman as he went down with three 180's and a high checkout of 156 from 'The Barber'.

The Welshman missed many doubles (3/11), including four chances to make it 3-0 earlier in the match. Meikle then threw out 156 for his first leg and won five of the six subsequent legs for the win.
