Co Stompé was a guest as an analyst on Viaplay during the PDC World Darts Championship. There, the former pro darter advocated a different system of play.
The current system involves throwing to the bull before the match starts to determine who gets to start. "I would like to see a game system with an equalizing turn. Say one player has checked out, then the other may then also try to check out his finish with three darts. That each player gets to start the leg in turn I would keep," said Stompé.
"That way matches run very differently and stay much more exciting," Stompé continued. "After all, now you have a lot of legs where one player just fails to get a finish."
Not in favour
Referee Marco Meijer disagreed. "It would just take away the charm of breaking your opponent's throw. Besides, it would be very weird if someone throws a high finish and the other player can then still equalise by throwing, say, double twenty."
