The
Premier League Darts makes its last visit outside the English borders this season on Thursday night. The fourteenth round of play of this competition takes place in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The playoffs are approaching and so the decisions are getting closer. Luke Littler, meanwhile, already seems certain of a spot in the final four, but in his wake, four more players are vying for the remaining three spots in the semifinals.
Currently, Michael Smith is just outside the top four with a fifth place ranking. With a four-point deficit to number four, 'Bullyboy' has some ground to make up in the coming weeks of play. The Englishman can start that on Thursday night against straggler Peter Wright. Given the very mediocre season of 'Snakebite', the first two points seem almost a certainty for Smith.
Leader Littler plays Nathan Aspinall in the second match of the evening, currently positioned in third place. 'The Asp' has a five-point lead over Smith, so the pressure is not immediately on. Although Aspinall will be eager to add a few more points to his total to be just a little stronger.
Michael van Gerwen currently holds the last spot for the playoffs. He plays in Aberdeen against Rob Cross, who with a ten-point deficit is virtually hopeless for a spot in the last four.
'Mighty Mike' has been making a somewhat volatile impression in the compeitite in recent weeks. In the past five weeks, he won one night, reached the semifinals twice, but also lost twice in the first round. Cross currently seems a perfect opponent to score points against, although Van Gerwen was surprisingly defeated by Cross last week in Liverpool.
The final quarterfinal is a cracker between Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price. 'Cool Hand Luke' is not yet sure of the playoffs, but can play himself safe for good on Thursday night. However, Humphries will then need the weekly title in Aberdeen. Opponent Price can already forget about a spot in the last four.
