Michael Smith continued last night to prove why he is the world ranked number one as he took his third straight weekly win in a row, fourth in total to keep his hopes of finishing top of the league alive.
"Last week I played really well. Apart from the first game I struggled a bit, the 180s were non-existent today," Smith told Online Darts in a post-match interview. "It took me 16 weeks last year just to win one and now I've won four and I'm still in with a chance of finishing top."
Of course, finishing top of the table doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things but it would still be an immense source of pride for Smith if he were to achieve it. "See Gezzy has been the best player, but I've been one of the best for the last three weeks," says Smith in regards to the battle for top spot.
"The O2 is different. Gezzy's never been there, I've only been there once, Michael has won it six times," continued Smith. "It could be nice being number one but I just wanna get on with it and play darts. I want to put on the best performance I can for the paying customers and as long as they go home happy and as long as I go home with that trophy I'm not bothered."
On Smith's only previous trip to finals night he was beaten by a rampaging MVG in the final. In recent weeks however Smith has had the Dutchman's number "It doesn't matter what you did yesterday its all about today. I just want to get to the O2 now and showcase my talents."
