Stephen Bunting squeezed through a final leg to crush the hearts of the Wieze crowd in defeating
Dimitri Van den Bergh, while
Nathan Aspinall went out at the first hurdle in the
Belgian Darts Open with a disappointing loss to
Richard Veenstra In a clash between the two most recent major champions, it was Bunting who looked the most likely. Back to back 13 darters gave 'The Bullet' a cushion, but he missed a dart at D16 to go 4-2 up in what would have been a break of throw and Van den Bergh was able to hang in there. The Belgian failed to attack the Bunting throw as the St Helens ace opened up a two-leg lead yet again.
In the 10th he missed a dart at bull for the match and Van den Bergh stepped in and pressed the button himself at the end of an 87 checkout. Van den Bergh made a critical error in missing a big number to have a shot at double 18 and Bunting punished by taking out 68 and winning his seventh consecutive match against 'The Dreammaker'.
In the final game of the night, Veenstra punished a wasteful Aspinall to cause 6-3 upset. Truthfully, neither player was magnificent, it was Veenstra who simply seemed to do the right things at the right time against an under-performing 'Asp', who appeared to suffer from a Premier League hangover after being in action in Brighton 24 hours ago.
