Striking: Van Gerwen produced average below 100 for first time in PDC World Darts Championship final

Michael van Gerwen went down 7-4 against Michael Smith in the final of the PDC World Darts Championship. It was the 33-year-old Dutchman's third defeat in six World Championship finals.

Van Gerwen played his first final in 2013, when he went down 7-4 against Phil Taylor. 'Mighty Mike' registered an average of 100.66 in that final.

First time no 100 average

In his next four finals too, Van Gerwen averaged above 100 each time. Until this year, with 99.58 he stayed below that magic limit for the first time.
