The
European Championship will kick off Thursday night in Dortmund. The field of participants consists of the 32 best players of the past Euro Tour season, including a number of debutants. However, there will also be some notable names missing from the Westfalenhallen, which will affect their position in the world rankings.
One of the most famous names that will be missing from the European Championship is
Mervyn King. From 2008 to 2021, he participated in all editions of the European Championship. By missing several TV tournaments, King has now dropped to 38th place in the world rankings. This is probably going to mean that we will also not see King at the World Darts Championship for the first time since 2008, considering his Pro-Tour season has been very mediocre so far.
Mensur Suljovic and Simon Whitlock have 13 and 11 European Championship appearances to their name, respectively, but missed last year and failed to qualify this year as well. Suljovic thus cannot defend his quarterfinal place from two years ago and thus will drop a few places in the world rankings.
Kim Huybrechts and
Callan Rydz will also be missing from this year's tournament in Dortmund, but are already certain of World Championship participation.
Adam Gawlas and Florian Hempel managed to reach the second round on their 2021 debut. However, both players are currently on the edge of the top 64 and could lose their Tour Cards at the end of the season. Other 2021 debutants who will be missing from this year's Westfalenhallen include William Borland, Ritchie Edhouse, Adam Hunt, Adam Smith-Neale, Boris Krcmar, Ted Evetts, Joe Murnan and Lewy Williams.
