Van Gerwen lacked motivation after already qualifying for Premier League Darts play-offs: "Giving 100% is more difficult"

Michael van Gerwen went down in the first round on Thursday night for the second week in a row. Mighty Mike lost 6-4 to Michael Smith in Newcastle.

"Of course I'm already qualified", Van Gerwen said to Viaplay. "Giving 100% is more difficult, I hate that." The number two of the Premier League rankings 'yearns for the final'. ''That's where I want to perform,'' he said.

"I don't have to lose to him (Michael Smith)," Van Gerwen continued. "But when you're throwing at seventy to eighty percent, you can expect these kind of results." On June 13, the play-offs will be played in Berlin. "Then the real prizes will be distributed. It's all about the final. I'll be there then, don't worry."
