Michael van Gerwen took part in the Life before Darts series with Moneybarn and he spoke about what jobs he did before darts, as well as how he got into darts in the first place growing up.
"My job before I was a professional darts player was a tiler, floors, bathrooms. Makes you as a person as I am at the moment and it's a bit different but I'd rather not wake up at 5am to do that job, I'd rather do what I do at the moment," said Van Gerwen to
Moneybarn.
"I was crap at football so I went to do something else. I was better than other kids my age who played darts so I won most of the times. From there on, I played more and more."
On the toughest part of being a darts player, he admitted that it's family time but sthat he knows he is in a good position as a result: "Probably the change because I'm away now a lot. I'm away from my family, friends, it changed a lot but it's the choice I made. I can't complain about my life, I'm a privileged man."
"I think the biggest highlight was my first World Championship win but I've won a lot of tournaments since then. Every tournament has something special anyway."
