The World Matchplay gets underway tonight in Blackpool. Michael van Gerwen will take on Brendan Dolan in the opening round.

Van Gerwen starts this PDC major as the defending champion after winning 18-14 over Gerwyn Price in the final last year. 'Mighty Mike' has previously won this tournament three times.
The 34-year-old Dutchman may no longer be the world number one, but he remains the top favourite to lift the Phil Taylor Trophy once again with another victory at the World Matchplay. Especially when looking at the statistics, Van Gerwen has reached the final at seven of the last eight majors, five of which he managed to win.

- I agree that this season the format was a bit stale, it would be better to have some new faces rotated in through the season. - I don't really understand why its an issue that Littler doesn't play in the events, they are barely televised so there is no draw for marketing and it gives the other players a better chance to define their narratives. The events are more of a throw back to old events. - Not everyone wants to watch pub players throwing 70 averages for about £500. Premier League is indeed a cash cow, but it does its job of promoting the game. - Laura looking fantastic and obviously has a hidden talent as a dart player. It was so nice to see her shock and joy of hitting that triple 20 I miss Laura, she was excellent and very knowledgeable regarding darts.
