Michael van Gerwen was surprisingly eliminated Sunday night in the first round of the
World Matchplay. The defending champion lost 10-7 to Brendan Dolan.
Although Van Gerwen managed to win the Poland Darts Masters earlier this month, he had a tough run-up to the prestigious tournament in Blackpool. The world number three underwent painful dental surgery, which requires a lot of recovery time. But Van Gerwen refused to blame this surgery for his defeat.
''You can blame everything, but that wouldn't be fair to Brendan Dolan. ''I think he just delivered a good match,'' Van Gerwen told Viaplay in an initial reaction.
The three-time world champion rather sought to blame his own failures. ''I just failed myself at the important moments. If I hit 52 (in the seventeenth leg) then I can bring myself to 9-9. Then he just has to see me win in the tiebreak. But that's all on if and that doesn't count anymore.,"
