Gian van Veen continues to impress at the European Darts Matchplay. After victories over Christian Kist (6-3) and Damon Heta (6-0), he now also defeated Martin Schindler (6-2).
Moreover, for the third game in a row, he threw an average of over 100. Van Veen reached averages of 103.92 and 114.15 earlier in the tournament and this time hit an average of 101.40.
The first two legs were neatly divided with Schindler, but then Van Veen put his foot on the gas. Via an 11-darter, 64 finish and a 13-darter the 21-year-old ran out to a 4-1 lead.
Schindler had two chances in the sixth leg to reduce the deficit, but missed two chances on double 8. Then Van Veen hit the double 18 to make it 5-1. Schindler then took his second leg, but then saw Van Veen end the game with a 13-darter.
A clash with eleven-time major winner James Wade awaits the young Dutchman in the quarter-finals. 'The Machine' proved too strong for former world champion Rob Cross 6-2.
