Michael van Gerwen is not currently experiencing the best period of his career. However, the 35-year-old Dutchman is determined to turn the situation around.
For Van Gerwen, the bar is logically always extremely high, only winning is good enough. As such, the recent defeats he has suffered worry him. "I've spoken with Vincent van der Voort about this because I've lost a few finals and I slipped down a little bit in important moments," van Gerwen admits to PDC Europe. "You need to look at where can I adjust? Where can I do better?"
"I've got a plan for this year, I'm on a mission and we need to make sure we can change that around," van Gerwen continues defiantly, although he refuses to divulge what exactly is his pre-planned method of returning to top form. "You will see," he says with a wry smile.
At his very best, there has arguably never been anyone better than van Gerwen. But at which point does he feel he was at his peak level? "I never like to compare moments because they're all different but I think I was most consistent in the year I won the World Championships as well as the Grand Slam, the Grand Prix, the Premier League..." he laughs.
