Imagine if it was 15 years ago, at the Circus Tavern people shoulder to shoulder…. Almost leaning on the stage because it was so cramped with fans, even players and commentators were amongst the throng of people chanting “There’s only one Philip Taylor!! There’s only oneeeee Philip Taylor!!! Walking along, singing a song walking in a Taylor wander land” or whoever it was, I went for the last 6 years it was there, some early rounds for an all dayer, quarters, semi’s, me and my buddy preferred to watch the final at home with our home brew and cheese and biscuits and what not. In all those times there I met players who were cool and happy to chat, I met Mardel and I was wearing a Bristow shirt, he spotted it as we were going to take a picture, and he said not with that fu#@ing shirt on and burst out laughing and pulled me in for a great photo. The fans rubbed shoulders, chatted, talked about the games coming up, who’s going to smash who, who would have a close match, chatter while we waited for our, not bad, but maybe “iffy” pints, and in all promised honesty I never ever saw a fight break out (I have seen it happen when the premiere league visited Stevenage, but that was more the bouncers and security” and it was reported in the paper as such) but Never ever at the WC @ the tavern. It was a totally different environment, proper fans were there, because that’s alls there was really room for, you’d find each table had the seats booked and used by darts teams who had come out and knew who all the players were, the people who actually follow the game, genuine straight up fans who also played and understood and enjoyed the fun and drama of buckets loads of 180s and big finishes, but now, after experiencing the Ally Pally four times or more, I’ve found/noticed that there’s a hell of a lot of people that aren’t interested in the darts one bit, they are there because it’s become a novelty, and bunches of tickets are bought up By companies as gift’s to send some of there super special employees to “t’darts” where they can get lagered up on panther piss fosters or some other crappy watered down dregs, some of them hit the toilets, and have a big old sniff. I’ve seen it, it’s a shame, the singing and chanting for random people that aren’t even playing, it’s become more like a football match that’s on edge a bit with slightly provocative/aggressive chanting and what not. It can become groups chanting at each other, and that’s usually stirred up by the plastic/pretend fans. That are there for the beer, and oh, dress as a giant cock or giraffe. Just my ramblings. I dunno. Lol
