Jim McEwan has laid down an early marker on Day One of 2022 WDF
Lakeside World Championship seeing off Landon Gardiner and will now take on Aaron Turner on Monday afternoon after averaging 101 and hitting a 121 checkout to seal it.
A 140 to leave 84 which he pinned on double 12 for an opening hold. McEwan continued to play superbly and despite missing 106, he pinned double 16 to go 2-0 up.
Gardiner hit a 180 to leave 62 on his throw but a 65 checkout saw McEwan. He missed the same checkout to hold to begin the second set but sealed the deal to go 1-0 up.
Gardiner finally got a leg with a 54 checkout on double 20. He missed double 18 for a 94 checkout and McEwan held throw on the same target. He hit a 180 and a 121 checkout for a 12-darter to win.
Priscilla Steenbergen came through a scrappy affair seeing off Darlene Van Sleeuwen in a 2-1 win with a 115 and 74 checkout to move through in the end and now she will face Anca Ziljstra.
It was an opening break for Van Sleeuwen but Steenbergen hit back on double 10. Following that, it was a leg that went over 40 darts before the latter hit double five to go 2-1 up.
Van Sleeuwen sent it all the way on double 14 before Steenbergen hit double 10 to seal the opening set. The Canadian missed the chance to hold but was handed multiple chances before sealing the deal at double six.
Steenbergen continued to miss darts and handed Van Sleeuwen the chance to break which she finally took to go 2-0 up. The Dutchwoman pinned double 20 to break back at 2-1 down before hitting the same target for a 45 checkout to hold and go one away.
She missed double 20 for a 63 checkout to win and Van Sleeuwen sent it to a final set. Beginning the deciding set, Steenbergen finally got an opening break after Van Sleeuwen missed multiple opportunities to hold.
Before hitting a 115 checkout on double 20 to go one away and then hit a 74 checkout to claim victory.
‘Relentless’ Rory Hansen also booked his place in the second round moving through in two sets and will now face Nick Fullwell in a good display from the Canadian qualifier.
Barilli took the opening leg on throw and Hansen exchanged a hold also to leave it poised in the opening throw. Hansen got multiple chances to break with Barilli unable to hold and he sealed the opening set on double eight.
Hansen missed 141 on double 12 and Barilli pounced on double 10 to break throw to begin the second set. He held on double 20 to go one away.
He began with a 180 on Hansen’s throw but missed double 20 for the set and Hansen returned for double six to hold. Missing 120 for 2-2, he returned with Barilli unable to claim the set and Hansen broke to go one away. A 119 checkout on double 20 saw Hansen move through.
