Thornton achieved goal after World Seniors win: "My wife said if I didn't win the trophy, she was going to lock me out"

Robert Thornton claimed the inaugural World Seniors Darts Championship over this past weekend seeing off Martin Adams 5-1 in the final.

Finally a World Champion in his own right, Thornton said he achieved his goal in not only winning the tournament but not getting locked out the house.

"Now you need to let me in. My wife said if I didn't win the trophy, she was going to lock me out," said Thornton immediately post match.

But in the tie he believes he got lucky at times in terms of how it ended.

"Martin (Adams) didn't play the way he usually does and he let me off the hook a lot of times and I took my finishes."

First winner of the brilliant trophy

He also paid tribute to the four players who he will be going alongside on the trophy who are sadly no longer with us.

"The four dart players already on it (Eric Bristow, Leighton Rees, Jocky Wilson and Andy Fordham), they are all great World Champions."
