INTERVIEW - Jim Williams believes the BDO has so much potential: 'It's heading in the right direction'

Jim Williams is one of the most established names left in the BDO after the likes of Glen Durrant and Mark McGeeney switched last year, we recently caught up with the Welshman to talk about his year, the upcoming World Trophy and his future aspirations going forward.
Williams said that he believes his season so far has been good and that focusing on the bigger category tournaments is paying off for him in terms of form.
''The season so far has been good. I've really cut back on the travelling this year and concentrating on the bigger tournaments which seems to be paying off. Still a few A+ comps coming up so hoping my years consistency continues'', said Williams to Dartsnews.com.
World Trophy
'The Quiff' spoke about the upcoming BDO World Trophy which begins this weekend at the King George's Hall in Blackburn. He said that he believes it is a move in the right direction and that he hopes it grows into the tournament it should be.
''The King George's Hall in Blackburn looks great. I think it's definitely a move in the right direction having it there for at least the next three years. I really hope it grows into the tournament it should be!''
Williams will take on Wes Newton in the first round with 'The Warrior' one of the most experienced players in the draw but he hopes for a strong start.
''There's never going to be an easy draw. Wes has played in the biggest tournaments all over the world, his experience really is second to none but my form is good and confidence is high so hoping for a strong start.''
Lakeside move to O2 Indigo
As previously revealed at the turn of the month, the BDO World Championship will move to the Indigo at the O2 Arena and for Williams he doesn't see the atmosphere being matched and that he's going to miss it.
Despite that though he is behind the move and is looking forward to playing in a brand new venue at the end of the year.
''It's a difficult question to answer about Lakeside. I can't ever see the atmosphere Lakeside brought ever being matched, the whole venue is full of excitement from the moment you walk through those doors. I'm really going to miss it.''
''The game that will always stick in my mind was the quarter final against Scott Mitchell last year. It was around midnight when the game finished, everybody stayed and were throwing every dart with you. Amazing!''
''I've never been to the O2 but I'm looking forward to a new venue! The pictures and reviews I've read are very positive.''
Rise of Glen Durrant and his own PDC aspirations
Williams' friendship with Glen Durrant is well documented and the Welshman said about 'Duzza's success that it's no surprise. His hope is to one day switch over like Durrant but that he wants to achieve more in the BDO first.
''It's no surprise Glen is doing so well and i think there is a lot more to come! He was very dominant in the BDO for twee or three years. The time was right for him to switch.''
''My aim one day is to switch myself. But before I do, I'd like to win a few majors and fingers crossed the world title! I think it would give a strong platform and experience to go full time in the PDC.''
2020 Q-School
In terms of Q-School, Williams said that returning to Wigan at the turn of the year depends on how the World Championship goes. He added though that he believes the BDO is heading in the right direction and that he really enjoys playing in it.
''Q School [participation] will depend on how the World Championships go. Honestly I don't know what I will be doing yet.''
''The BDO has so much potential and I do really enjoy playing in it. We've had lots of positive things happening but obviously still a few issues to iron out, all in all though it's heading in the right direction.''
