He's not wrong. Only two members of the world's top eight has survived one almighty coup d'etat. Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright were both dumped out on Friday evening, along with Michael Smith. Mensur Suljovic and Daryl Gurney also crumbled on our own darting Freaky Friday, where the
European Championship outside shots switched places with the
PDC bigwigs.
Gerwyn Price and Dave Chisnall must feel like all their Christmases have come at once. Particularly so for Chizzy, who survived a trial by fire in the first round. A simply magnificent 157 finish ended Adrian Lewis' hopes. Now it's the Iceman whose title chances the St Helens man would like to melt away.
Cristo Reyes has had his thunder stolen somewhat. His win over Mensur Suljovic was earth shattering - until Ricky Evans, Simon Whitlock and Steve West took bigger scalps. Still, the Iberian can be delighted with the fact that he beat the Gentle comfortably. Darren Webster is due a run deep into a major tournament. Surely now's the time. Yet this European Championship doesn't care whose dreams it dashes.
James Wade was typically Wadey against Martin Schindler. A German crowd coming off the back of eviscerating William O'Connor was silenced by the Machine's unerring ability to produce exactly what's needed to win the game. Will Daryl Gurney-conquering Ricky Evans demand Wade's A-game? Time will tell.
Max Hopp tried to quietly go about his business against O'Connor. That was never going to happen. The Maximiser sometimes seems almost embarrassed by the rabid home support for him, but there's no denying how much it bolsters his hopes. James Wilson's a cool customer though, and too likeable for the Dortmund masses to jeer for long. Hopp will have to call upon the form he showed early on against the Irishman, before he let the occasion get to him.
