Friday's afternoon session saw eight contenders grab a second round spot. Now eight more will be granted a Saturday spot; the rest go home. There are two
PDC major winners in the mix. None of the 16 have won a
European Tour title this season - the German Darts Championship could end their barren spell. Max Hopp was the German crowd's main man in the afternoon. Now all eyes will be on Martin Schindler. He may be short but his patience better not be, with the meticulous (sometimes controversial) Justin Pipe lining up against him. Michael Rasztovits then meets shock UK Open semi-finalist David Pallett. Jermaine Wattimena has saved his more explosive performances this season for the European Tour. James Wilson, his first round opponent, will be wary of a repeat. Two-time world champion Adrian Lewis is yet again unseeded in Europe. Toni Alcinas is the opponent who may have hoped for an easier first round tie. Ross Smith, he of the now-vanquished curse, plays the evergreen Terry Jenkins. Rob Thornton hasn't been at the top of his game for quite some time. The two-time major champion will surely need to pull something out of the bag if he's to see off Robert Marijanovic, who'll have the German crowd on his side. Then come two exciting talents, 'Rapid' Ricky Evans and Danny Noppert. The final tie of the first round is between two players who secured qualification on Thursday. Cristo Reyes has seen it all before on the European Tour. His opponent, the prodigious Nico Blum, most assuredly hasn't. The winner faces the very toughest of tests on Saturday, with Michael van Gerwen lying in wait. Play starts at 7.15pm local time, or 6.15pm BST.
