Dave Chisnall was expected to produce a good run by some during this year's World Matchplay. But his tournament was cut short at the first hurdle after a dismal display as he was routed by Krzysztof Ratajski on Sunday night in Blackpool.
The PDC also got their wish after a lot of close matches with the easy win for Ratajski 10-2 in the end meaning that the England v Spain Euro 2024 final can go ahead being shown in the Winter Gardens without minimal hitches. Ironically though it was an Englishman who fell in the final match of the night.
Ratajski punished a poor Chisnall early on. He surged into a 3-0 lead with a 121 checkout and followed that up with an 80 checkout and pinning double five for 5-0 as he was in dreamland early on.
On return, it didn't get much easier for Chisnall as Ratajski soared into a 6-0 lead and held throw for 7-0 with a whitewash becoming a real possibility.
Chisnall finally clicked into gear with an 11-dart 81 checkout and a 70 checkout for 8-2. But this period of resurgence was brief. Ratajski hit a 72 checkout and he missed multiple match darts but Chisnall strayed into double 20 which summed up his night going for double one and 'The Polish Eagle' hit double two to sail into the next round. England fans were seen celebrating in the crowd as no doubt they will be begging for the big screen to come down so they can watch the match.
For Chisnall, it is a dismal early end to his local tournament and he joins Peter Wright as the two biggest names out thus far. He hit 2/9 on his doubles and despite Ratajski missing 19 darts throughout the contest, he averaged a lot more and breezed through a contest expected to be tight.
