Mike De Decker will make his debut at the
World Matchplay later this month. 'The Real Deal' is only the fifth Belgian ever to qualify for this major.
De Decker managed to qualify thirteenth on the Pro Tour Order of Merit for the World Matchplay. "I'm very satisfied with this," De Decker told Het Nieuwsblad. "This is one of the biggest tournaments and harder to qualify for than the World Cup. So, then you have to be satisfied."
"Especially when you know I could actually only qualify for one round of the European Tour. I was just very regular at the floor tournaments. A final, semifinal, several last sixteen spots. I always had a run and rarely if ever went straight out."
The 27-year-old Belgian will take on Joe Cullen in the opening round of the World Matchplay. "It's someone who also throws fast and doesn't make a circus out of it. I mainly want to throw well and not go off, you know. It's my debut. If I can beat Cullen, then everything else is bonus."
Holiday scrapped
"That I am on the rise? Yes, for the World Grand Prix I'm also there at the moment and the World Cup is already pretty much in. Things are going well, yes. They say that behind the scenes sometimes. Although I did have to cancel my vacation now. I was looking forward to Ibiza, but just that week is now the World Matchplay."
