Dirk van Duijvenbode remains positive despite defeat in opening group match: "I didn't expect to reach this level already"

Dirk van Duijvenbode was unable to win his opening group match at the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts. 'Aubergenius' went down 5-4 against Gary Anderson.
Van Duijvenbode has been struggling with a shoulder injury for a while. "So I didn't expect to reach this level already," said the 31-year-old Dutchman to Viaplay post-match. "I surprised myself with this match."

"Average was definitely not bad, especially that one lesser leg kept me under 90 average. It went a lot better with that brace."
Despite the narrow defeat, Van Duijvenbode therefore takes the positive with him into the remainder of this tournament. "That I can make it difficult for a top player like Gary is certainly positive, although he also missed some doubles and his victory was certainly deserved. Hopefully I can raise my level some more in the coming matches and then we'll see what's still possible."

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
