Dutch darts commentator Nieuwlaat once attended international tournament himself: "And I even won a match"

Jacques Nieuwlaat has been active as a referee and commentator for many years, but it turns out he can throw a nice dart himself.

Nieuwlaat threw in a competition in the Netherlands, but in 2009 he also made his debut at an international tournament. "Roland Scholten's driver was ill and so he asked me if I wouldn't take him to Salzburg, where a Players Championship was being played that weekend," Nieuwlaat told Viaplay.

"On Friday night, a qualifying tournament was played there for that Players Championship. I decided to enter, but lost 6-0 in the first round against Vincent van der Voort."

"The day after, however, I got to compete again," Nieuwlaat continued. "In the first round, I won against an Austrian who really couldn't do anything and in the second round I faced John Part. I actually got a 2-0 lead, but in the end I went down 6-2. By the way, Mervyn King was refereeing that match and he was quite grumpy because he also refereed my particularly long match in the first round", laughs Nieuwlaat.
