Fallon Sherrock thinks women might be afraid to play against male darters on a regular basis. In a broadcast of William Hill's YouTube show Club 501, she calls on her female colleagues to put more energy and time into their sport so they can get closer to the level of men.
The ‘Queen of the Palace’ was recently a guest on the broadcast of Club 501, a programme presented by commentator and former darts player Wayne Mardle. ''If the women actually put in the effort and the practise, and actually played against the men more regularly, then they would get up to that standard.''
''That’s why I keep saying we need more opportunities to play against the men, because doing so will make our game better'', she continued. ''So many women play exceptionally well in the MODUS Super Series, which is proof of that. Gemma Hayter is an example of a woman who brought out her best game when playing against the men in the MODUS.''
Dreaming of winning a world title
The 30-year-old Englishwoman also spoke about her goals for the future. Sherrock's ultimate dream is to win the world title. Winning a women's world title is the most realistic of those. Although there is an obstacle; the PDC currently prohibits players from competing in both the WDF Women's World Championship and the PDC World Darts Championship in the same year.
“My mindset at the moment is just to keep doing what I’m doing,” said Sherrock. “But I do have goals. I want to start winning more titles and at some point, I want to be a world champion. Because I’m on 30 years old, I feel as though I have so much time left to achieve these goals because there’s no age limit in darts. As long as I can maintain my standard, I should be okay.''
“I want to win more titles and keep getting to the World Championships. Eventually I want to be a world champion, whether that be in the women’s game or the men’s. That is one of the boxes I want to tick. I’m not sure how I’ll go about it, whether I’ll play in the women’s until I win it and then play in the PDC, I don’t really know. Either way, I want to be a world champion.”
Sherrock is currently qualified for both world championships. She won the Las Vegas Open in January, a tournament with gold status on the WDF calendar. That title gives her direct entry to the Women's World Championship at Lakeside.
In addition, Sherrock is third on the PDC Women's Series Order of Merit after 20 of the 24 Women's Series tournaments. If Sherrock is still in the top three after the last four tournaments, she will also receive an invitation to the PDC World Darts Championship. Sherrock will therefore then have to make a choice whether she will compete in the PDC World Darts Championship or the WDF Women's World Championship.
