Gurney, White and Whitlock through to second round in Hildesheim; Van Barneveld and Beaton exit

The eighteenth Players Championship tournament kicked off in Hildesheim on Sunday. Ian White, Simon Whitlock, Chris Dobey and Daryl Gurney are among the first names through to the last 64.

White started his tournament with a 6-2 win over Adam Smith-Neale, while Gurney defeated Dylan Slevin 6-2. Whitlock beat Jeffrey Sparidaans 6-3 to move into second round, and Chris Dobey booked a whitewash win over Lukas Wenig (6-0).

The likes of Kim Huybrechts, Keane Barry and William O'Connor also won their first game, while darting legends as Raymond van Barneveld and Steve Beaton are out already. Van Barneveld lost 6-5 to Rowby-John Rodriguez, while Beaton was beaten by Jeff Smith (6-4).
