Mickey Mansell shocked to come through a thriller against Peter Wright (6-5) on Friday night at the European Darts Grand Prix in Sindelfingen.
"I'd have been gutted if I'd lost that," admitted Mansell afterwards, having been in the ascendancy throughout the tie. "I felt I was playing well, I felt the throw was there but I just couldn't find the first dart. Then everything I was doing to adjust was complicating matters. As the game wore on, I knew I was getting chances but I wasn't capitalising."
Although 'Snakebite' has shown signs of a resurgence in form recently, this match was a struggle for the former world champion. "But even then it is still a player to be reckoned with," said Mansell. "Until the last leg, he had 71% on his doubles. He's always in with a chance for the win."
In the second round, Mansell will take on fourth-seeded Damon Heta. "I will have to raise my level a bit to have a chance against him. If that works out it will definitely be a great match."
