"It is painful for me, It hurts": Van Gerwen left frustrated after fourth UK Open title slips out of his grasp

Michael van Gerwen will not add a first major title of the season or a fourth UK Open title after losing unexpectedly to Andrew Gilding in the final 11-10 on Sunday night.

Gilding the latest in a long line of first time champions watched as Van Gerwen missed a match dart at 102 in the decider before hitting double 20 and as expected being the favourite, MVG was left distraught.

“To play games like this are always difficult. Andrew had nothing to lose and I think he played really well,” conceded Van Gerwen.

“I think I made many mistakes and I know that, but I’m the only one to blame and fair play to Andrew.

“At this moment I can’t find many positives. I’m here to win tournaments and when you don’t do that it’s disappointing.

“It is painful for me. It hurts. Everybody knows what I’m like, but I will take it on the chin. Credit to Andrew. He had a phenomenal tournament.”
