Michael van Gerwen has advanced to the last eight at the German Darts Championship in Hildesheim. After a tough match, 'Mighty Mike' was too strong for Joe Cullen after a decisive leg.
Cullen managed to break Van Gerwen already in the first leg and led 2-0. With a 72 finish and a 13-darter, the Dutchman returned to 2-2. Cullen then broke Van Gerwen again with a 79 finish, but Van Gerwen immediately broke back with a 12-darter.
An 89 check-out from Cullen in the seventh leg produced a third break for Cullen, but he lost it too. Van Gerwen made it 4-4 with a 13-darter and captured the lead with a 170 finish. Cullen forced a deciding leg, after which "Mighty Mike" took the win with a 14-darter.
In the quarterfinals, Van Gerwen will face Gabriel Clemens on Sunday night. The German managed to reach the last eight in front of his own crowd after a 6-4 victory over Ross Smith.
