In "On This Day In..." Darts News looks back at a player's event or achievement on a particular date. This time a return to June 6, 2004.
On this day, Roland Scholten managed to win his only major. The Tripod took the overall victory at the UK Open, which at the time was still played at Bolton's Reebok Stadium.
Earlier in the tournament, Phil Taylor topped it off by throwing his second TV nine-darter in his match against Matt Chapman. Also memorable, at the 2004 UK Open, Adrian Lewis and Andy Hamilton made their televised tournament debuts.
Back to Scholten, who had previously lost his first major final to Alan Warriner-Little at the World Grand Prix in 2001. He now encountered the same Warriner-Little in the last eight, after the Dutchman had already dealt with successively with Mark Dudbridge, Henry O'Neill and Denis Ovens.
In the quarterfinals against Warriner-Little, Scholten took a 3-1 lead, after which his opponent took the lead with three legs in a row.
The Dutchman then took three legs in a row himself, contributing to an 8-6 victory over The Iceman. In the last four he met Steve Beaton, who managed to take a 3-0 lead.
After that Scholten lost only one more leg, an reached the final with an 8-4 victory.
In the final against John Part, Scholten started by winning six of the first seven legs. Part fought back from 6-1 to 8-5, but the Canadian didn't come any closer.
Scholten won the final battle and in this way won his only PDC major.
