In 'On this day in ...', Darts News looks back at an event or performance by a player on a particular date. This time a return to 31 July 2016.
It was the last time a Euro Tour tournament was played in Düsseldorf. A special location in darts. Players did not do their walk-on there through the audience, but from a staircase on which the players walked down together with a walk-on girl.
In that tournament Terry Jenkins, Robert Thornton, Alan Norris, Wes Newton and Andy Hamilton played in Düsseldorf. They all don't have a PDC Tour Card anymore.
There was however one more Dutchman participating: Michael van Gerwen. He started the tournament with a resounding 6-0 victory over Jamie Caven and then took on Kyle Anderson (6-2), Jelle Klaasen (6-4) and Kim Huybrechts (6-3) to reach the final.
At the other end of the scale, Wright beat Steve West (6-5), Gerwyn Price (6-2), Mensur Suljovic (6-0) and Stephen Bunting (6-4). The final was then decided after a final leg. Van Gerwen threw an 11-darter in the deciding leg and so took the final victory in this Euro Tour tournament.
