Peter Wright defies 107 average from Luke Littler in final to win the 2024 German Darts Championship

Peter Wright has been crowned champion at the 2024 German Darts Championship in Hildesheim, celebrating more European Tour success after an 8-5 win over Luke Littler in the final.

En route to the final, Wright had shown some of best form in a long while, peaking with brilliant wins over Michael van Gerwen and Dave Chisnall in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively. Littler meanwhile, had his own tricky route on Sunday night, defeating Damon Heta in a last leg decider in the quarter-finals, before then thrashing Daryl Gurney in the semi-finals.

With legs of 11, 14 and 13, Littler immediately put down a marker and raced into a 3-0 advantage over Wright early on with average at an already stratospheric height. Wright finally got on the board in leg 4 though, to stop the rot and ease some pressure.

After holding throw to restore his three leg advantage in the next leg, Littler blew his opportunity for a 5-1 lead, with Wright punishing perfectly with a 110 checkout finished on double top, staying in touch at 4-2 down. Finishing a 12 dart hold with a 100 checkout in the next leg though, Littler showed no signs of lasting damage from his blown chance. Wright though, then returned fire with a ton plus checkout of his own, this a 146 to keep in touch.

To fully get back in the contest though, Wright needed to break the Littler throw. In leg 9, Snakebite finally succeeded, after the teen had missed double 18 for a brilliant double-double finish, Wright pounced to get the contest back on throw. After Littler missed a dart at tops for an immediate break back, Wright was back level and a few moments later, Snakebite got his nose in front courtesy of a 14 dart break to punish a number of missed darts at double from Littler. Despite some sloppy finishing of his own in leg 12, Wright did move one away from victory at 7-5.

After Wright had hit a 180 to leave 60 for the match, the pressure was on Littler to pin a skin saving 167. When he couldn't do so, Wright returned, mopped up and claimed a brilliant and much needed tournament win.
