Price leads ultra-short European Championship qualification race after victory at Hungarian Darts Trophy

Gerwyn Price is of course the first leader on the PDC European Tour Order of Merit after capturing the title at the Hungarian Darts Trophy.

In the Hungarian capital Budapest the first European Tour tournament of the season was played. Later this month a second tournament will be played in Gibraltar. Because of the corona pandemic it remains at two tournaments. This means that the top-32 of the PDC European Tour Order of Merit after the Gibraltar Darts Trophy, will play at the European Championship in Salzburg.

There is a good chance that players will miss out on participation in the European Championship even though they have won as much prize money as the number 32 on the ranking list. In case of a tie, the PDC rules look at countback, which means the last tournament played. Players who have only played the second tournament therefore have an advantage over players who have only played the first. If players are still equal after the countback, the positions on the PDC Order of Merit are taken into account.

Alan Soutar, Bradley Brooks, Daryl Gurney, Geert de Vos, John Michael, Richard Veenstra and Ross Smith reached the second round at the Hungarian Darts Trophy. But because they are absent in Gibraltar, there is almost no chance they can compete at the European Championship. Steve Beaton, Geert Nentjes and Boris Krcmar were eliminated in the first round in Hungary, but have also qualified for the Gibraltar Darts Trophy. They therefore have a big advantage over the aforementioned seven players.
