Raymond van Barneveld failed to pull off a shock at the European Darts Championship on Thursday night. The five-time world champion lost 6-1 to
Michael Smith in the first round.
The difference between the numbers one and 29 in the world rankings was steep. Smith threw an average of 99, compared to 90 for Van Barneveld. Moreover, Smith posted a finishing percentage of 55 percent, while "Barney" hit only one of his four darts on the doubles.
''I felt good,'' Van Barneveld surprisingly opened his interview at Viaplay afterwards. ''I went on stage and actually felt pretty good, but he just played fantastic. He grabbed everything and threw everything out. For me it just wasn't good enough''
All in all, the 56-year-old Hague native felt there was no shame in losing to "Bullyboy. ''In the end you just get hurt; 6-1. The world champion showed for a moment how much further ahead he is and that's not really all that surprising.''
